CHARRIS en TORONTO & MONTREAL

TIAF & Galerie D’Este, Montreal. Octubre/Noviembre 2009

If the works of Angel Mateo Charris fascinate as much as they intrigue, it is because they invite us into a peculiar universe where reality and fiction collide with stunning exuberance. The picture space is inscribed in a quasi-architectural universe where the distilled forms create an aesthetic at the juncture between minimalism and surrealism. As much as the paintings feature figurative naturalism, the artist cleverly includes a dose of fantasy. The transparency of the iconography is contrasted with semantic opacity to confound the narrative with a disconcerting symbolic weight. In essence, the apparent realism of the figures is overshadowed by the extravagant ambiguity of the depicted scenes.
By juxtaposing strongly coded icons both cultural (Darth Vader, Smurfs or Mickey Mouse) and artistic (Paul McCarthy's pig) with familiar imagery (the snowman), the Spanish artist translates his perception of reality. Working counter to De Chirico's dreamlike vision, Charris, admittedly fascinated by the Italian artist, establishes his conception of the world through the metissage of contemporary cultural references. The narrative tension generated by his figurative hybridization allows the artist to unveil his own views on reality, mankind and society.
Eccentricity, incoherence and iconic contradictions enter into a poetic visual dialogue that offers the viewer a singularly efficient space for reflection. Charris' paintings are certainly works to be attentively studied, but more importantly, they are works upon which to meditate. If their symbolic strength comes from an especially audacious iteration of cultural and artistic references that shape our daily lives, their efficiency is the result of the semantic and narrative potential inherent to each piece. The viewer is left without a key to interpretation. It is for each person to create his or her own story and to relate the works to each other. For example, when first looking at Faust (2009), one cannot help but be surprised by the adimensional confrontation of the anonymous coated man with the enormous mask of Darth Vader. What can this modern Faust be thinking, faced with the immensity of his own dark side? Will he sell his soul to the devil like the character so dear to Goethe? Whatever the outcome of this confrontation, the restless wandering of this Faust seems as inescapable as that of the man of Mudanza (2009), whose luggage is as heavy as the uncertainty of his identity.
It is, therefore, with irony, melancholy and existential questioning that Charris presents a personal and particularly lucid vision of reality. We are invited to penetrate into this fantastic imagining to turn a gaze just as critical and magical on our contemporary existence.
